AST137: RON NAGORCKA - LOVREGANA - MUSIC FROM A TASMANIAN FOREST (1990) / SOUNDSCAPES FROM WILDERNESS (1988) (2 X C31 REISSUE)

My attention was only drawn to Ron Nagorcka in the last year, how his beautifully subtle experimental compositions had alluded me for so long is a mystery. Nagorcka initially made his marks on the outer fringes of Australia’s fertile experimental music scene in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He, along with American Warren Burt, was responsible for spearheading the seminal Clifton Hill Community Music Centre. Amongst its cohort, the CHCMC counted Essendon Airport, Ros Bandt, Ernie Althoff Laughing Hands, and Tsk Tsk Tsk. The Centre provided a space in Melbourne’s north for early experiments in avant-garde performance, art installation and radical musics, often involving the emerging disciplines of cassette manipulation, synthesizers and field recording. Nagorcka’s work from this period utilises aspects of all of these approaches to completely unique compositional effect.

1988’s Soundscapes From Wilderness is a more strictly field recording based affair, offering two different environmental pieces across it’s two sides, one in Victoria’s Black Forest and the other a Northern Tasmanian rainforest, to which Nagorcka has added subtle didge dirges. Lovregana (1990) is a surprisingly diverse selection of vignettes, drawing on processed birdsong and synthesizer, largely composed in just-intonation. Lovregana’s pieces simultaneously provide a fascinating insight into Ron’s interpretation of these spaces as they existed at these moments in time and offer a great snapshot of a vital operator early on in Australia’s experimental music history.

Always at the forefront of Nagorcka’s practice has been the intention of raising awareness concerning Australia’s natural landscapes and humanity’s responsibility for respecting them. In accordance with Ron’s core values, proceeds from this release will be donated to Tasmanian Land Conservancy.
