AST131: PATRICK GIBSON + MICHAEL TEE - SPACE LIGHT MUSIC C60

Where to begin?

Probably best to mention that I’m honoured in being permitted to present this previously unissued, long-form piece from Patrick Gibson and Michael Tee, recorded in 1982.

I scoured the Information Autobahn lo’ and hi in search of any info on Space Light Music, with no dices thrown my direction.

I was however able to lay hands on a scan of a tape cover for the album, which must have only existed on the few copies gifted to friends of the duo.

Further, from listening to another (not properly issued) recording of Michael and Patrick from this period, ‘What We Did to Amuse Ourselves One Thursday Evening at No 3 Wilshire Street’, it appears to have served as the source material for SLM. Later slowed down, warped and played over to end up in the form presented as the original installation and also here in 2021.

In need of greater illumination, I went straight to the source.

I’ll allow Michael to better shine a light on this 80’s Oz oddity:

“We never released that stuff. It was just a one off commission for the Pre-Powerhouse Museum, I think it was called the Applied Arts and Sciences Museum in Ultimo, for a ‘holograph’ exhibition.
They wanted ‘experimental’, but really [just] wanted Vangelis ... Apparently our music lasted a week and then they switched it for Vangelis.

Pat and I constructed this piece using a 5 metre 4-track tape loop. Which we looped around bottles in the studio and played live with and also had one of the tracks recording and constantly erasing… while we ate pizza and tried not to do too much.

It can be a gruelling listen at times.

It was originally called ‘Cowboys Are (Part 1)’  as a companion piece to the track on ‘What’s a Quaver’ by YA YA CHORAL. We thought it was funny how the music bares no resemblance to the YYC Cowboys Are song.”

There you have it, fogies. I can't say I quite agree with the 'gruelling' aspect Michael mentions, but maybe that's more a result of the gruel I've subjected my own ears to over the years than any definitive statement.
I like Space Light Music's slowly shifting accumulations and decellerations over it's lengthy runtime. It scratches a completely different itch to the off-kilter pop-sensibility both Michael and Patrick honed in their respective groups, Scattered Order and The Systematics, but is no less thrilling.

Much thanks due to Phil Turnbull, from whom I was able to source the recording originally and also to Michael Tee, who was immediately receptive to the idea for a release and offered the information above with no need for prodding.

Respect always to the late Patrick Gibson, whose work is one of the brighter beacons from this most fertile period in Australian post-punk / experimental music, his tunes still shine as strong as ever.
